A properly-installed metal roof can last 50 years or more — often the entire time the current owner is in the home. It's the most durable roofing material available on the residential market, and the only one that legitimately carries a warranty of 40+ years without major maintenance.
Beyond longevity, metal offers real-world advantages: it doesn't hold moss and lichen, it lets snow slide off (which lightens the load on the structure), it's non-combustible in a brush fire, and it reflects solar radiation, which can lower cooling costs in the summer.
Standing-seam, profiled or metal shake?
Standing-seam is the top-tier profile: no exposed nails or screws, folded vertical seams, and an unmistakably modern look. It's our go-to for contemporary homes or high-end renovations. It comes in pre-painted galvanised steel (most common) or aluminium for lakeside properties.
Profiled (barn-style) metal with visible waves is more affordable and installs faster. It's a great fit for country-style homes, additions, detached garages and farm buildings. Still extremely durable despite the lower price point.
Panels that imitate slate or traditional shakes combine the look of a premium material with the durability of metal. They cost more, but the finished look is almost impossible to achieve any other way.

Installing a metal roof takes more expertise than shingles. Tolerances are tighter, flashings have to integrate perfectly, and thermal expansion of the metal has to be factored into every detail.
