Blown-In Insulation

Blown cellulose for fast, affordable and effective insulation.

Blown cellulose is one of the highest-performing and most eco-friendly insulations available. Made from fire-treated recycled paper, it fills every crevice and delivers excellent thermal resistance. It's also the most cost-effective option for re-insulating an existing attic.

Problems we solve

  • Hard-to-reach attic needing fast, uniform insulation.
  • Current R-value insufficient (R-20 to R-30) needing upgrade to R-60.
  • Nooks, obstacles and joists making batt installation impossible or ineffective.
  • Need to add insulation without tearing out the existing layer.
  • Project eligible for a Rénoclimat grant requiring an approved material.

Blown cellulose: performance meets sustainability

Blown cellulose is one of the best-performing and most environmentally friendly insulation products on the market. Made from recycled paper (mostly newspaper) treated with borate for fire and insect resistance, it offers an R-value of roughly 3.5 per inch — comparable to mineral wool, and better than several popular alternatives.

Its big advantage in residential attics is its ability to get everywhere. Blown through a large hose, it fills every gap between joists, surrounds every electrical cable, fills in around pipes — all the places where batt insulation leaves thermal bridges.

Fast, clean installation

Installing blown cellulose in a typical attic takes half a day to a full day. Our gear includes an industrial blower that stays in the truck, a long hose that runs through the attic hatch, and a technician working inside the attic to direct the flow and ensure even coverage.

The process generates very little dust inside the home and no construction waste. Empty cellulose bags go back with our crew and get recycled.

Before adding insulation, we install ventilation baffles at the soffits to preserve airflow between the soffits and the roof vents — a critical step often skipped by less careful contractors, with disastrous consequences for roof lifespan.

Real-world energy savings

A home that goes from R-20 to R-50 in the attic can see its heating bill drop 15 to 25% depending on the state of the rest of the building envelope. For a typical Gatineau home with a $2,000–$2,500 annual heating bill, that's $300–$600 in savings every year — and the investment pays itself back in five to seven years.

Beyond the savings, it's the comfort that changes. A well-insulated home is warmer in winter, cooler in summer, temperatures are more even room to room, and drafts disappear. It's an investment you feel every day.

Some government grants (Rénoclimat, Éconologis) can contribute to the cost. We help you figure out whether you qualify.

FAQ

Does blown cellulose settle over time?+

Yes, slightly (about 10% in the first year). We compensate by blowing in a thicker initial layer than the target R-value.
