Mineral Wool Insulation

Mineral wool or fibreglass batts — reliable traditional insulation.

Owens Corning mineral wool and fibreglass remain proven choices for insulating walls and accessible attics. Easy to install, fire- and moisture-resistant, they offer excellent value while improving home soundproofing.

Problems we solve

  • Exterior walls, basement or garage needing batt or panel insulation.
  • Fire-stop requirements around chimneys, ducts or fire separations.
  • Need excellent acoustic performance on top of thermal insulation.
  • Existing fiberglass batts damaged, damp or poorly installed.
  • New build or major renovation requiring Code-compliant insulation.

Mineral wool: a timeless classic

Owens Corning mineral wool is one of the most versatile and durable insulation products on the market. Made from molten volcanic rock spun into fibres, it offers excellent thermal and acoustic properties and most importantly exceptional fire resistance — it can withstand temperatures up to 1,000°C without melting.

Unlike blown cellulose, mineral wool doesn't settle over time. A batt installed today will have the same thickness and performance in 30 years. That's an important difference for applications where consistent long-term performance matters: exterior walls, unit separations, floors over joists.

Ideal applications

We mostly use mineral wool in three contexts. First, to insulate exterior walls during a deep renovation: batts fit perfectly between 2x4 or 2x6 studs, and their density also makes them excellent for sound (perfect for reducing street noise).

Second, for attics with floors where you plan to walk around — you can't blow cellulose in without a floor on top, but batts install easily between floor joists.

Finally, for jobs where fire resistance is a concern: attached garages, boiler rooms, unit separations in condos. In those cases, mineral wool meets Building Code requirements with no cheaper alternative.

Installation that respects the craft

Mineral wool can be irritating to skin and airways during installation. Our crew always wears the right protective gear (coveralls, respirators, gloves), which also reflects how seriously we take every job.

Every batt is cut precisely to fill the full cavity without compression. An over-compressed batt loses R-value, and a poorly-fitted batt leaves thermal bridges. Those small details, invisible once the walls are closed, make all the difference in real-world building performance.

We also handle the air-sealing and finishing details needed to turn mineral wool into a high-performance envelope system. Even the best insulation only gives its full value inside a complete system.

Why choose Toitures Boulet

  • Owens Corning mineral wool — non-combustible, water-repellent, superior sound-dampening.
  • Precise installation that hugs the cavity with no gaps or compression — where real R-value lives.
  • Fire-stop compliance for regulated applications (garages, chases, stairwells).
  • Crews trained in proper installation practice and safety (full PPE, adequate ventilation).

FAQ

Mineral wool or cellulose: which to choose?+

Blown cellulose is generally more affordable and offers better attic coverage. Mineral wool is preferable for walls and offers better fire resistance.
